It’s with extreme pleasure that we bring you the fourth album by Australian progressive post-rock giants Tangled Thoughts of Leaving! “Oscillating Forest” is a fantastic record that sees the band pushing down on the experimentation button and delivering something truly unique. Describing this album instead of just letting someone listen to it is truly a daunting task, as “Oscillating Forest” is first of all, full of surprises, but more importantly, more about a wholesome continuous listen than a song-by-song album. Let’s try then to present this album and give it as close to full justice as possible with the limited means at our disposal.

Staying true to its unique and distinct character and even truer to the band’s name and repertoire, “Oscillating Forest” is a true jungle of sounds, a genre-bending album that oscillates from classic post-rock fare to ambient, and even drone and noise! A luscious and luxuriant soundscape that may even floor the listener at first with its gigantic proportions but that ultimately rewards with a rich listening experience. Tangled Thoughts of Leaving are known for their intricate and elaborate plots full of twists and turns and their exhilarating roller coaster rides and the band’s fourth album is no less. However, what immediately surprises even after the first few minutes is the turn for full experimentation the band has taken on their new record. The opening five minutes already reveal so much of a record that’s going to be anything but linear, and methodical like post-rock can be.

Elegantly blending all these disparate elements, Tangled Thoughts of Leaving have created an exquisite record, one that truly pushes any preconception of genre, and freely explores the paths more unbeaten, and dares to differ. “Oscillating Forest” is an epic journey that defies post-rock’s dogmatic rules and strict dichotomies and fully embraces music as a whole, as a beautiful act of self-expression.
